I was browsing through some gorgeous artworks featuring black characters which had me thinking:

Sometimes, being an artist of color, I wonder if there's some kind of invisible mandate that says I'm required to draw stuff associated with my race.
I mean, do people expect my gallery to be full of imagery that specifically, predominately reflect black culture and portray persons of color?
Am I less of an artist if I choose to draw my characters wearing french braids and polo shirts instead of cornrows and dashikis?
Am I showing less appreciation if I decided to draw someone of my race wearing garbs associated with another race?

Just some thoughts that I've wrestled with lately. :icongo-on-plz:

As an artist I draw things associated with my race because it is uncommon to draw cute dark skinned people. A lot of poc usually create dark skinned characters and things associated with their culture for the reason I stated. It's uncommon so draw whatever you like. Don't worry about complaints if anything I had a complaint saying that my character was too dark. XD I was like "no really? seriously?!"
